I went to Zen Mountain Monastery. The beginner instructions was filled with foreign words. It was hard to understand. Buddhism is difficult for Westerns to grasp in part because there are so many strange foreign words that everyone assumes you know when they speak of Buddhism. Words in Chinese, Japanese, Pali, Sanskrit. Confusing! Then a whole bunch of vocabulary to discuss Buddhism in Korean.
Haha. Just realized my complaint is that there are too many foreign words in those foreign languages. But come on ... do I really need to learn 5 languages just to figure out Buddhism?

연주 When we learn about Buddhism, prayers and terms e.g. dhamma, khamma, etc. are all in Pali Sankrit.

There is a Japanese house in Philadelphia. I want to go, but it is a 5 hour drive. Very complicated directions. Crazy New York drivers. Crazy Philadelphia drivers. Unfamiliar roads. Not sure if I will work up the courage to make the trip.

Julia I wonder who are worse drivers ... Seoul or New York drivers.

I am use to Korean's Subject ob-ject Verb word order. Then an app ChineseSkill taught me Subject Verb ob-ject order for Chinese. Is that really true? It had me completely surprised.

Julia I checked. Seems word order for Chinese is similar to English. Well, that is one advantage for learning Chinese. http://resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Word_order

Julia Author (who is Asian American) argues that pressure from parents to excel are bad. That assimilating with white Americans is bad. Personally, I fear some day Asian Americans will get as angry as other racial groups and the whole America will explode. Too much anger, blame, frustration, and division.

Ryan I have no idea about living in America as an Asian.. sorry

  8.      about Handwriting

      0

I am still practicing my handwriting. Today, worked on the mantra from Heart Sutra
    揭諦揭諦 波羅揭諦 波羅僧揭諦 菩提娑婆訶
    아제아제 바라아제 바라승아제 모지 사바하
The concentration and effort to write just a few Chinese letters amazes me. Hangul I am comfortable using to take notes, but when it comes to writing for a Korean to read, I feel inadequate.

Yesterday, I started a Memrise deck of Chinese radicals. Going really smoothly. Of course, partly that is because I started with the easy ones of 1 or 2 strokes. I am practicing calligraphy using magic water paper, which is just cool!

Some times I pick a study task for myself, without fully understanding how much work it is. 240 chinese characters in the Heart Sutra. I want to do calligraphy of the Heart Sutra in both Korean and Chinese. It is quite a task! I have had to reassess how long it will take me just to look up the stroke order on each hanja character.

I am patting myself on the back for doing my flashcards tonight. Now that I am trying to learn the Hanja as well as the Korean on the 1000 Most Frequent Korean Words list, it feels like doing flashcards takes forever. I am pitiful at trying to hand write Hanja, and I then have to look them up to find out the stroke order. Really slows me down. So cheers for me plowing thru flashcards this week.
