Yesterday, I started a Memrise deck of Chinese radicals. Going really smoothly. Of course, partly that is because I started with the easy ones of 1 or 2 strokes. I am practicing calligraphy using magic water paper, which is just cool!

My old eyes struggle to read chinese letters on my phone. I need new glasses. I am tired of a blurry world.

These are some of the hanja characters I have learned. I can draw all of them, although my calligraphy skills are marginal. I keep practicing.
I saw a Sumi-e class being offered at a Zen temple a few hours drive from my house. I am tempted to sign up. It could only help to learn the basics of chinese brush painting and calligraphy from a chinese man who is expert in it.

I was thinking it would help learning Hanja if I saw Chinese radicals more ... so here is my wallpaper.

Julia Impressive lila. Everyone tells me I don't *need* to learn hanja at my beginner level, but that is what I am interested in. I got so excited when I visited a Buddhist temple this week, and I could read the first three characters on the sign.

lila you probably don't need at this point! ;P but if you love learning, why not?! i loved learning chinese signs, maybe that's what help speed-up the process ;)

Last week I was working on trying to write spring. 春 spring 봄
It was very hard. This week I am giving myself an easy one: 八 8 팔
Two strokes ... but I still struggle getting those to look right with my brush pen. Practice, practice, practice.

Been searching for information about the brush pen ink. Ended up on site where they suggested I take private tutoring lesson. OK. But they said I should learn Chinese first before learning how to write Hanja. Umm ... thanks but not thanks. One language at a time is enough for me. I am only learning hanja for my Korean studies. Learning Chinese at the same time would confuse me.

연주 it's useful to learn Chinese if you wanna learn Hanja but I don't think it's necessary. I studied Hanja too and I wasn't studying Chinese at that time

It is daunting to think about learning all the chinese characters, but learning the 215 chinese radicals over the course of a year seems possible.

I like how when you learn 木, then you see 森, 林 you can guess it means forest, woods.

My friend Cimi is going to China next year. I don't know Chinese, but I do know a little Hanja, so we are studying Hanja together. (Not sure it will help her at all on her trip. But it is fun to learn!) This week, we are doing the word for tree. 나무

A single line. Maybe it is because I have never learned to draw/paint, but I find it so scary. My friend Cimi who I am learning a few hanja characters with is cheering me on.

Julia I noticed when using the fabric leaves with markers how writing on something that absorbs and spreads ink is very different that the usual writing with ball pen I am use to .
