Tagalog is a vernacular dialect like Ilocano, Bisaya, Waray, Panggalatok, etc. Vernaculars are spoken by a group of people usually in ethnic origin. Based on my understanding, Filipino Language was derived from Tagalog since Tagalog is widely used language all over Philippines. So it shouldn't be used to refer as Tagalog, rather it should be Filipino language. However most of Foreigners interchange Filipino as referring to language or to people since the people of the Philippines is also called Filipino too. That's why foreigners prefer to use the term Tagalog to refer for the language

연주 Very clear explanation when we say Thai language, it pretty much means the central dialect too although we have other dialects as well
